(You will look in vain for the dumplings in this recipe. The very filling dessert is only called that. It was eaten only at Christmas and New Year’s Eve, after the main meal). 1. rub the crust off the rolls (or white bread).

Cut the bread into even slices and place them on a plate. Boil the milk with the sugar and drizzle half of the sugared milk over the rolls. (They should not fall apart, however.) 2. Put the poppy seeds in a suitable bowl and pour the remaining milk over the poppy seeds on the spot and stir. Mix the rum, raisins, grated almonds and vanilla sugar (and/ or bitter almond oil) with the poppy seed mixture.

Spread a glass bowl with the drizzled rolls, put a layer of poppy seed paste on top, repeat with rolls, then poppy seeds and so on until the whole is used up. The top layer must be poppy seeds. Put the almond flakes on top. Keep in the refrigerator with the lid closed until serving.
