Sodium hydricum is available in the pharmacy – provided one has no connection with chemists – also under the name ‘sodium hydroxide in cookies’. It is advisable to choose the quality level ‘purest’, or ‘analyte-pure’, or ‘purissimum’, after all the household chemical ‘Rohrfrei’is also mainly sodium hydroxide, but it is still not suitable…

You put the cold tap water in a heatproof glass bowl at the beginning, then (!) the chemical, and dissolve it while stirring occasionally. (I use a stainless steel whisk for this.) As it dissolves, the liquid becomes slightly milky-cloudy and heats up. Therefore, the Jena glass bowl is suitable. The liquid lye can be stored in a sealed jar and used a few more times. For safety reasons, the jar should be labeled and stored away from beverages. Preparation of the pretzels: mix the salt and flour.
